GUS’ history

The student committee at the University of Gothenburg

The relatively large quantity of student’s unions that have existed at the University of Gothenburg throughout the years, has often caused issues. Especially concerning the election of student representatives to central university bodies, such as the university governing board. Due to this, at the beginning of 1990, a number of union active students took initiative to promote better contact among the unions. This initially took rather informal forms which, among many examples, included recurring breakfasts in then vice-chancellor Jan Ling’s kitchen. This in turn led to the creation to “The Student Committee at the University of Gothenburg” in 1994. The organisation later changed its name to The University of Gothenburg Student Unions (GUS) in 2000.
